Patriotic Response to WWII POW Families

Negra as he captures the upheaval and anxiety of families affected by World War II: debate over volunteering to serve, familial ties being temporarily severed as enlistees leave for foreign shores, and the interminable agony of awaiting word about loved ones who have been captured or presumed lost. Join Ocean County Historical Society in its hybrid (in person and Zoom) presentation on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. Sharing the presentation with Ron are his mother, Agnes Joan Negra, now 102 and a 46 year-long resident of Forked River, who devised a way to help the POW families with her own patriotic endeavor. Learn about Agnes’ dedicated service in Ron’s book, Waves of Hope, which Ron and his wife, Valerie, will have available for purchase. Ron and Agnes have been highlighted in the Asbury Park Press, on CBS News (NY) and News 12NJ. Travel back to a time when nothing went to waste, “garbage” became “black gold” and farms and gardens flourished in every backyard. New Jersey is called the “Garden State” for a reason and Ocean County has a long agricultural history. Take a lesson from your grandparents and great-grandparents. Stop throwing your “garbage” away and start composting! Learn how easy it is to turn “waste” into a free-soil amendment for your garden! Join Sandra Blain-Snow and Tanara Hall from Ocean County Solid Waste Management and Master Composters to learn about composting and gardening in Ocean County. As advocates for the environment, they oversee the County’s public outreach and education on all aspects of recycling, composting, gardening, and sustainability issues. This program will include classroom and hands-on training in the museum’s garden. Put a star on your calendar for May 1st at 2:00 PM and sign up for a fascinating program at the Ocean County Historical Society, 26 Hadley Ave., Toms River, NJ. Presenting Black Baseball in America in the Era of the Color Line, Dr. Lawrence Hogan, Professor Emeritus of History at Union County College in NJ, will demonstrate why he has been described as a “national treasure” by the official Historian of Major League Baseball, John Thorn. Starting Wednesday May 4th, 2022 and continuing the first Wednesday of every month. Tables will be set up along the sidewalk on Main St. (starting at The Downtown Shops, 53 Main St.) TRAC artist’s along with some friends will be showing off and selling their works right on Main St. Some of the artist’s will be doing demos, some artists will have mini projects for the kids to take home. You never know when live entertainment will show up either! Don't forget to visit the stores in the Downtown Shops and all the other businesses Toms River has to offer. This is a free, family friendly event.

Subtitled How Muslims and Jews Can Make Peace, One Friendship at a Time, the book is a manifesto that two Americans, a Muslim woman and a Jewish man, created in response to the perceived rise of bias and bigotry in the US. Rehman and Ruby have spent decades in interfaith collaborations, nurturing cooperation among communities. They will share their observations about ways that people of all backgrounds can create lasting friendships through knowledge and trust.
