20th Annual Business Holiday Decorating Contest

20th Annual “Be-Deck Your Business” Contest Criteria & Details Brighten the streets of our central business district! Downtown businesses are encouraged to decorate the exterior and/or windows of their businesses. Businesses may be decorated anytime, but must be ready for judging on Thursday, December 7th 2023. Prizes: Winner of each category receives: Business name and photo on our website. $100 Prize A plaque for your business Categories: Best Window Display Best Downtown Business (Center) Best District Business Judging: Judges are from 100.1 WJRZ. Judging will commence on Thursday, Dec 7, at 5pm. Criteria used by judges are as follows: Originality: Unique design and creative use of lights and decorations Arrangement: Display and placement of decorations Theme: Story line or scene Overall: Overall presentation Who is Eligible? Businesses within the Downtown district. (The southside of Rt. 37 From the Toms River Shopping Center to Hooper/Hadley Avenue, down along the river to the Garden State Parkway) How to Enter: There is NO entry FEE! NO pre-registration! Psychic Saturday – 2nd Saturday of every month at Trinity’s Magickal Intentions! Come in and welcome Sharon O’Brien! Sharon was born into a family of intuitives and mediums. She got her first Tarot deck at 15 and has been reading ever since. Through the years she has added other tools to her belt and tailors each session to the individual. She has a strong connection with Spirit and Nature, bringing balance to her sessions. Her hope is that you walk away inspired and feeling lighter. Sharon is best known for Tarot and Lenormand card readings, Celtic readings (ogham) and pet readings (you can bring a picture of the pet or an item of theirs). She also uses intuition and connects to Spirit. She is a Reiki Master Teacher and a board certified Holistic Health and Life Coach. Sharon was a co-founder and Elder in The Song of Avalon Grove until it closed in 2017. Ryan Radice Sunday, December 10, 2023, at 2:00 PM “A War Against Disease and Despair: Immigrants, Nurses, Soldiers, and the Transformation of Patient Care on Ellis Island During World War I” While known primarily for its use as an immigrant facility, Ellis Island went through several major changes from the time war was declared in Europe in 1914, to the time that the last military members left the island in 1919. During the First World War, Ellis Island and its associated hospital facilities would be the victims of German terrorism, a mobilization points for thousands of Red Cross nurses bound for the frontlines, and a debarkation hospital that was the first stop home for countless sick and wounded soldiers returning from the battlefield. Ryan Radice is a historian from Scotch Plains, New Jersey. A graduate of Monmouth University, his research interests include immigration history, the American Revolution and early republic, and the history and archaeology of New Jersey cemeteries and military sites. Ty “Dancing Wolf” Ellis January 14, 2024, at 2:00 PM “Continuous Fight for Recognition on Lenape Homelands” Lenapehoking(k); the land of the Lenape, and the land of our ancestors. The lands that many Lenape people were forcibly displaced from, while others attempted to hide in plain sight for over a century before finally being allowed to claim their culture and heritage as Indigenous People publicly. This basic human right was something not afforded to Native People on the East Coast until just a short 45 years ago This discussion will go on to speak about the history of Lenape people on these lands (and touch on those that were removed) starting with the Trail of Tears, to the American Indian Religious Freedom Act of 1978, to reformation of our community, to the constant struggles of each decade after.
