Back by popular demand, our Holiday Tea will be offered to those wishing to visit the beautifully decorated Mathis House Tearoom at 600 Main Street in Toms River on Thursday, December 7, 2023. Guests may look forward to the ever-delicious scones, yummy tea sandwiches, and scrumptious mini-desserts that accompany generous pots of fine tea as they chat with friends in the historical elegance of this stately home. As usual, a few lucky guests will win door prizes. The seating is at 11:00 AM. Cost: $40 members; $45 non-members. Be sure to make your reservation starting 10:00 am on October 9th by calling Pat at 732-814-2979. 20th Annual Residential Holiday Decorating Contest
District residents are invited to decorate the exterior of their homes with lights, wreaths, scenery and other decorative ornaments. Who is Eligible? Home must be located within the boundaries of the Downtown Toms River Business Improvement District (The southside of Rt. 37, from the Toms River Shopping Center to Hooper/Hadley Avenue, down along the river to the Garden State Parkway). How to Enter: There is no entry fee. NO PRE- REGISTRATION!!! Judging: Judging begins at 5pm, Thursday, December 7th. Criteria used by judges are as follows: Originality: Unique design and creative use of lights and decorations Arrangement: Display and placement of decorations Theme: Story line or scene Overall: Overall presentation Prizes: 1st Place = $200 and a yard sign designating your home as the winner of the 2023 “Deck the Homes” Holiday Decorating contest. 2nd Place = $100 and certificate 3rd Place = $50 and certificate Winners will receive a letter in their mailbox on Friday 12/8 stating that they won and how to receive their prize. Ocean County Historical Society 26 Hadley Ave, Toms River, NJ, United StatesRyan Radice Sunday, December 10, 2023, at 2:00 PM “A War Against Disease and Despair: Immigrants, Nurses, Soldiers, and the Transformation of Patient Care on Ellis Island During World War I” While known primarily for its use as an immigrant facility, Ellis Island went through several major changes from the time war was declared in Europe in 1914, to the time that the last military members left the island in 1919. During the First World War, Ellis Island and its associated hospital facilities would be the victims of German terrorism, a mobilization points for thousands of Red Cross nurses bound for the frontlines, and a debarkation hospital that was the first stop home for countless sick and wounded soldiers returning from the battlefield. Ryan Radice is a historian from Scotch Plains, New Jersey. A graduate of Monmouth University, his research interests include immigration history, the American Revolution and early republic, and the history and archaeology of New Jersey cemeteries and military sites.
