Ocean County Historical Society 26 Hadley Ave, Toms River, NJ, United StatesFIFTH ANNUAL OCEAN COUNTY HISTORY DAY The fifth annual Ocean County History Day is scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM, “rain or shine.” The location is the Ocean County Historical Society, 26 Hadley Ave, Toms River. The event is sponsored by the Ocean County Historical Society, Ocean County Cultural and Heritage, and the Joshua Huddy Chapter of the DAR. Admission is free! Join us as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. Meet historical reenactors, take a tour of the Elizabeth Sculthrop House and Museum, celebrate with us the 75th anniversary of the Ocean County Historical Society, and visit the various displays set up by Ocean County historical organizations and museums. Ocean County Historical Society 26 Hadley Ave, Toms River, NJ, United StatesLocation: Ocean County Historical Society Time: 2:00 PM Sunday, September 14th – The Garden State: Where Ideas Grow – presented by Linda Barth The Ocean County Historical Society is proud to present New Jersey author Linda Barth as she discusses her book, A History of Inventing in New Jersey: From Thomas Edison to the Ice Cream Cone. Join Linda as she explores groundbreaking, useful, fun, and even silly inventions and their New Jersey roots! Linda’s book will be offered for sale, and she will be glad to autograph your copy. Linda, a lifelong New Jersey resident, has written two books on the D&R Canal and three children’s picture books. She has also contributed to the Encyclopedia of New Jersey. Linda currently serves as the executive director of the League of Historical Societies of New Jersey and as the president of the D&R Canal Watch. These events take place at our museum at 26 Hadley Avenue in Toms River. These events are free, but your donations in support of our programs are appreciated. Come on a surprisingly hilarious journey through the history of the English language during a virtual author talk with Gabe Henry at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sep. 17. Henry will discuss his newest book Enough is Enuf: Our Failed Attempts to Make English Eezier to Spell. Anyone who has the misfortune to write in English will, every now and then, struggle with its spelling. In the comic annals of linguistic history, legions of rebel wordsmiths have died on the hill of spelling reform, risking their reputations to simplify English spelling. This book is about them: Mark Twain, Eliza Burnz, Noah Webster, Upton Sinclair, Emma Dearborn, Theodore Roosevelt, Benjamin Franklin, and countless others.
