A Senior Archaeologist at a cultural resource consulting firm, adjunct professor at Monmouth University, and co-director of the Archaeological Field School of Monmouth University, Mr. McHugh has over 17 years of experience in archaeology & historic preservation. The c. 1816 Cedar Bridge Tavern was bought by the Ocean County Parks Department in 2007. The Ocean County Cultural & Heritage Commission describes it as, "a historic treasure that offers a unique window into the European experience in the N.J. Pinelands." Mr. McHugh conducted numerous archaeological investigations there in advance of the county's improvement project. OCHS Welcomes Accomplished Photographer, Gary Saretsky
Ocean County Historical Society 26 Hadley Ave, Toms River, NJ, United StatesWell respected throughout the State history community, especially in Monmouth & Ocean Counties, retired Monmouth County archivist & educator Gary Saretsky is also an outstanding photographer. In 1972, he became seriously involved with photography, eventually sharing his knowledge and experience with students at Mercer County Community College. Established in 1985, his online photo bookstore currently offers more than 800 titles for sale. Art & photography lovers should plan to join OCHS for our Zoom presentation of Gary Saretsky's illustrated slide lecture, Nineteenth Century New Jersey Photographers. After showcasing photographers of State renown, Gary will focus on selected photographers of Ocean County. Gary lectured under the auspices of the Public Scholars Speakers Bureau of the NJ Council for the Humanities before the pandemic. There will be over 50 tables of antiques, crafts & collectibles, plus local history books, local historical societies' exhibits, local artist exhibits, children's entertainment, music, baked goods and a snack bar with hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn, bagels, soft drinks, etc. There will be a classic car display presented by NJ Shore Regional National Chrysler Products Club and a model railroad display by the Ocean County Model Railroad Club. Also, we will have the kickoff of our large annual "50-50 raffle" & free tours of the Ocean County Historical Society's Elizabeth Sculthorp Force House. New additions include Allaire Village costumed tradesman display, 1880's baseball costumed exhibit, World War I re-enactors, Civil War re-enactors including musket firing, suffragist exhibit with free commemorative giveaways, and renown Jersey Shore artist Cathleen Engelsen. Ocean County Historical Society Hosts WWI Program
Ocean County Historical Society 26 Hadley Ave, Toms River, NJ, United StatesJoin Monmouth University Specialist Professor of Public History & former US Army Fort Monmouth Command Historian, Melissa Ziobro, for a Zoom presentation on how the US Army Signal Corps employed women as telephone switchboard operators during WWI. The "Hello Girls" worked long hours to ensure battlefield communications. After the war, they fought for veteran status and are being considered for a Congressional Gold Medal today. The focus will be on coyotes that arrived in NJ about 80 years ago and can now be found in almost every town across the state. In the past 2 years, coyotes have immigrated to Barnegat Light, reproduced, and are dispersing across Long Beach Island. Learn some history of eastern coyotes, their ecology and behavior, and important guidance for avoiding negative human-coyote interactions. It will be held on the grounds of the Ocean County Historical Society, located at 26 Hadley Ave., Toms River. There will be fun for the entire family. The day will include displays by the various historical societies and museums of Ocean County, tours of our Victorian era home and museum, golden oldies performed by the band Jersey Gold, military reenactors, an opportunity to meet Joshua Huddy, a large model train exhibit, a snack stand and more. The History of Slavery in NJ
Ocean County Historical Society 26 Hadley Ave, Toms River, NJ, United StatesJoin Ocean County Historical Society in welcoming Rick Geffken, a former Adjunct Professor at Ocean County College with a BS in Economics and an MA in Social Sciences, who is currently heading up a project called the New Jersey Slave Records Index under the auspices of Monmouth University. Mark September 19th at 2:00 PM on your calendar and make your Zoom reservation today because you’ll want to hear this popular speaker, writer, and historian reveal stories from New Jersey’s dark history of slavery. Dutch and English settlers brought the first enslaved people to New Jersey in the 17th century. By the time of the Revolutionary War, slavery was an established practice on labor-intensive farms throughout what became known as the Garden State. On a positive note, Mr. Geffken also traces how emancipated slaves became prominent citizens in Lincroft, as did their next four generations. Jeff is a graduate of Lacey Twp. Schools, Ursinus College (BA in history) and Kean College (Master’s in Education). He currently teaches history at Southern Regional HS and resides in Seaside Park with his wife, two children, and dog. For our program, Jeff will discuss the American doughboy of WWI—his training, rations, uniforms, equipment, and combat. Jeff will wear the WWI uniform and display original artifacts from the Great War that you won’t want to miss. The African American Experience in Atlantic City

Hunter Sr., founder of the African American Museums in Atlantic City and Newtonville, NJ, on January 16th. Ralph has witnessed the changing Atlantic City cultural scene and added his personal collection of memorabilia to a museum there that highlights more than 11,000 graphics, drawings, paintings, and household items on a rotating basis. With his historical narrative, Mr. Hunter embraces diversity through cultural education. Collaborating with area businesses, educators, collectors, and community residents, he is committed to sharing with students, families, and other community residents the rich and honest depiction of the African American experience in Atlantic City. Enthusiastic storyteller, Ron Post, a surveyor, sailor, racer of catamarans, car collector and 1970 graduate of the University of Walt Disney World, will present his research on the history of the Cranberry Inlet that once connected Barnegat Bay with the Atlantic Ocean. Ron grew up in Morris County, collaborated with a surveyor after high school graduation, was drafted into the Army, returned to Morris County to collaborate again with a surveyor, and at age 29, moved with his sailboat to Orlando, FL. He became a marina supervisor at the Contemporary Hotel in Disney World, married his wife Karen in 1980, and then returned to the Jersey Shore. Earning his surveyor’s license in 1983, Ron started his own surveying business in Toms River. With Karen’s help, their “mom and pop” business working out of the basement has morphed into the present Ronald W. Post Surveying Inc. offering property, utility, and aerial surveying to the public. Bringing his love of surveying and maps to his presentation, Ron will explain how Mother Nature created, then destroyed the Cranberry inlet, until enterprising developers and builders finally tamed [...]

New Jersey is called the “Garden State” for a reason and Ocean County has a long agricultural history. Take a lesson from your grandparents and great-grandparents. Stop throwing your “garbage” away and start composting! Learn how easy it is to turn “waste” into a free-soil amendment for your garden! Join Sandra Blain-Snow and Tanara Hall from Ocean County Solid Waste Management and Master Composters to learn about composting and gardening in Ocean County. As advocates for the environment, they oversee the County’s public outreach and education on all aspects of recycling, composting, gardening, and sustainability issues. This program will include classroom and hands-on training in the museum’s garden.
