Ocean County Historical Society 26 Hadley Ave, Toms River, NJ, United StatesSunday, November 20th, 2022, at 2:00 pm - "Treatment of Native Americans: Genocide or Clash of Cultures?" by Richard Trimble Please join the Ocean County Historical Society at 26 Hadley Avenue, Toms River, NJ for the following program: Helen Hunt Jackson authored an influential book in the late 1800s entitled, A Century of Dishonor. She could have made it three centuries. Richard Trimble, a retired History professor from Ocean County College will trace the evolution of the Indian Wars from 1620 to 1890 and conclude with a discussion of whether White America's treatment of the Native Americans was a tragic clash of cultures or an outright genocide. Richard Trimble still serves the college as the volunteer director of the OCC Military History Institute. He also serves as a trustee and a docent at the Squan Beach Life-Saving Station. Trimble holds five college degrees and has written over fifteen books. Brian Betz is a past winner of the Betty Carter International Jazz Competition. Vinnie Corrao is a veteran guitarists who has performed at many and varied jazz venues. There will also be a question-and- answer portion of the program.

Bring your camera to have pictures taken with a Victorian style Santa from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. Take a tour of our holiday decorated Victorian Era house and museum and enjoy a model train exhibit. During the late 19th Century, Lakewood NJ was a winter resort for the rich and famous, including John Rockefeller and Jay Gould. It had grand hotels that entertained the elite of New York and Philadelphia society. Led by a visionary scientist and inventor with a knack for getting entangled in scandals, investors from New York and Philadelphia proposed to build a lavish rival resort in the pines three miles away, on the border of Lakewood, Jackson, and Toms River. Their goal was two-fold: creation of a posh playground for the wealthy and a gathering place for inventors, scientists and engineers who were experts in power generation and electricity.
