DESCRIPTION:Ty “Dancing Wolf” Ellis \nJanuary 14\, 2024\, at 2:00 PM \n“Continuous Fight for Recognition on Lenape Homelands” \nLenapehoking(k); the land of the Lenape\, and the land of our ancestors. The lands that many Lenape people were forcibly displaced from\, while others attempted to hide in plain sight for over a century before finally being allowed to claim their culture and heritage as Indigenous People publicly. This basic human right was something not afforded to Native People on the East Coast until just a short 45 years ago \nThis discussion will go on to speak about the history of Lenape people on these lands (and touch on those that were removed) starting with the Trail of Tears\, to the American Indian Religious Freedom Act of 1978\, to reformation of our community\, to the constant struggles of each decade after. \nTy “Dancing Wolf” Ellis is a citizen of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribe; one of three state recognized tribes within New Jersey\, and a Sovereign Nation. He has had many responsibilities within his Tribal Community\, being a part of or in charge of most all existing committees within the tribe at some point within his 33 years in the physical world. He has facilitated many lectures and has been extensively taught the ways of his people by Chief Mark “Quiet Hawk” Gould\, Chief Lewis “Grey Squirrel” Pierce\, and reigning Chief Urie “Fox Sparrow” Ridgeway through his life\, and still to this day. \nThis event takes place at our museum at 26 Hadley Avenue in Toms River. SUMMARY:Screening of the Reluctant Piney
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL EVENT: Screening of The Reluctant Piney (and bake sale!) \nSunday\, June 11 at 2PM at the Ocean County Historical Society \n26 Hadley Ave\, Toms River\, NJ 08753 \nAdmission: $5 (proceeds support ongoing building maintenance; pre-registration is required) \nJoin the Ocean County Historical Society for a screening of the new\, 90-minute documentary film\, The Reluctant Piney. The film is produced and directed by William J. Lewis\, author of New Jersey’s Lost Piney Culture. Admission will be $5.00 cash and collected at the door\, with all proceeds supporting ongoing much-needed maintenance to our historic house museum. There will also be a bake sale. We are grateful to Mr. Lewis for his support of our organization. \nAbout the film: The Pineys of yesterday and today are as diverse as the flora and fauna of the Pine Barrens. Walk with us down roads less traveled to places only a few know. See glimpses of ghost towns and hear firsthand stories that have been hidden away by a veil of secrecy only to be revealed by the remaining Piney Outlaws. New Jersey’s Lost Piney Culture is more than the pinecone pickers or pine ballers of the last two centuries. Pineys’ way of life is a counterculture story. But that industry ended in the 20th century which is why it is so vital that we here present to you\, relics of its passing. And bring the term Piney into the 21st century by showcasing the diversity of those who wear the title today. Pride runs deep in the woods of the Pine Barrens and in the Piney Tribe. If you were born in the 40s or 50s in Southern New Jersey\, you may have witnessed a similar scene where old-time Pineys tell of a good day’s work being put into the woods. Those Woods Pineys or Reluctant Pineys never realized it\, but they were farmers without owning an acre of land. The land they harvested from was over a million acres and through their shared travels each tale tells of traditions of yesterday and how it was to be a Piney then and where we are today in the 21st century.” \nAbout the producer/director: William J. Lewis is a lifetime resident of the New Jersey Pine Barrens\, as were multiple generations of his family before him. He shares his Piney adventures on social media networks under “Piney Tribe.” He preaches exploration without exploitation and to teach our children to be tomorrow’s environmental stewards. After proudly serving as a U.S. Marine\, William went on to graduate from Rider University; he founded an environmental nonprofit to get kids outdoors and has served in leadership roles for both governmental and New Jersey nonprofit organizations. His travel mileage stretches across the globe from many locations in the United States to the Horn of Africa\, which has helped in enriching his perspective of our New Jersey Pine Barrens. \nMr. Lewis will have his books available for purchase if anyone is interested. \nSEATING IS LIMITED! SUMMARY:"New Jersey's Lost Piney Culture" by William J. Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Location – Ocean County Historical Society – 26 Hadley Ave.\, Toms River\, NJ \nSunday\, February 5th at 2PM\, “New Jersey’s Lost Piney Culture\,” by William J. Lewis \nDeep within the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens\, the Piney people have built a vibrant culture and industry from working the natural landscape around them. Foraging skills learned from the local Lenapes were passed down through generations of Piney families who gathered many of the same wild floral products that became staples of the Philadelphia and New York dried flower markets. Important figures such as John Richardson have sought to lift the Pineys from rural poverty by recording and marketing their craftsmanship. As the state government fought between preserving the Pine Barrens and developing the region\, Piney culture was frequently threatened and stigmatized. Author and advocate William J. Lewis charts the history of the Pineys\, what being a Piney means today and their legacy among the beauty of the Pine Barrens. \nWilliam J. Lewis is a lifetime resident of the New Jersey Pine Barrens\, as were multiple generations of his family before him. SUMMARY:The Lights Go Out in the Electric City: South Lakewood Park by Robert DeSando
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, December 4th\, 2022\, at 2:00 pm – “The Lights Go Out in the Electric City: South Lakewood Park\, An Exclusive Enclave for Socialites and Scientists\, Reduced to Burning Embers and Forgotten by History\,” by Robert DeSando \nPlease join the Ocean County Historical Society at 26 Hadley Avenue\, Toms River\, NJ for the following program: \nThe subject of this talk is a forgotten “city” in New Jersey known alternately as South Lakewood Park and Electric City. During the late 19th Century\, Lakewood NJ was a winter resort for the rich and famous\, including John Rockefeller and Jay Gould. It had grand hotels that entertained the elite of New York and Philadelphia society. Led by a visionary scientist and inventor with a knack for getting entangled in scandals\, investors from New York and Philadelphia proposed to build a lavish rival resort in the pines three miles away\, on the border of Lakewood\, Jackson\, and Toms River. \nTheir goal was two-fold: creation of a posh playground for the wealthy and a gathering place for inventors\, scientists and engineers who were experts in power generation and electricity. Work was well underway. In the 1890s\, a luxury hotel\, The Casino was built\, a 150-foot arc light tower was installed to bathe the new community with “artificial moonlight” at night\, a number of homes were constructed\, roads and a new railroad station were provided to facilitate transportation. Then\, as success seemed assured\, a series of catastrophes struck. The treasurer of the development corporation was arrested for embezzling $250\,000 and tried to take his own life. The hotel burned down the night before it was to open for New Year festivities. An infant was killed. Other occupants were seriously burned and injured. Its owners lost everything\, as the hotel was uninsured. A twister toppled the steel tower. Investors pulled out\, salvaging what they could. The anticipated influx of scientists and engineers never arrived. By 1905\, the community vanished. Pine trees\, weeds and grass reclaimed the land. The Central Railroad of New Jersey eventually abandoned the railroad station. During a storm\, a giant tree smashed through its roof. What was left of the structure was destroyed by arson. Today\, most people – even those living in the area – do not know South Lakewood Park or The Electric City ever existed. \n  \nRobert A. DeSando has been a journalist\, lobbyist\, and state official for more than 16 years. He held a variety of positions with the Asbury Park Press\, from reporter to bureau chief. DeSando was communications director and deputy executive director for the New Jersey State General Assembly. During the administrations of Governors Christie Whitman and Chris Christie\, he served as a special assistant to the state education commissioner and assistant commissioner for the Department of Transportation. DeSando was director of government affairs for the New Jersey School Boards Association. Now retired and living in Jackson Township\, N.J.\, he is active as a member of the Ocean County and Lakewood historical societies. \nTo register for this free program\, send your name\, zip code\, email address\, and the date of the program (Dec. 4) to oceancountyhistory.zoom@gmail.com. \n
