DESCRIPTION:Bob Fernekes \nApril 14\, 2024\, at 2:00 PM  \n“When Bipartisanship Mattered: “The Life and Career of US Senator Clifford P. Case” \nFor 33 years in the U. S. Congress\, nine in the House and twenty-four in the Senate\, Clifford Case was a powerful voice for civil and human rights\, environmental protection\, ethics in government and a global role for the U.S. in combating the spread of communism and promoting democracy. Case was determined to uphold honesty and integrity in government\, introducing legislation on financial disclosure years before it was required by law\, while pursuing an end to the Vietnam War when it became clear U.S. policy was causing more harm than good. Case also was a forceful advocate for New Jersey\, working closely with his senate colleague Harrison Williams and other members of the state’s Congressional delegation to advance the state’s interests in Washington\, with particular emphasis on preserving and protecting the natural environment. Learn more about this fascinating figure from his biographer himself. \nWilliam R. Fenekes (B. A.\, M. A.\, Ed. D.\, Rutgers University) taught social studies and Spanish from 1974-1987 at Hunterdon Central Regional HS in Flemington NJ\, and then served as supervisor of social studies at Hunterdon Central 1987 to his retirement in December 2010. He received his doctorate in social studies education and curriculum in 1985. He is the author of many articles and books\, including his comprehensive biography\, Clifford P. Case and the Challenge of Liberal Republicanism (Lanham MD: Lexington Books\, 2023). \nThis event takes place at our museum at 26 Hadley Avenue in Toms River. Congress\, nine in the House and twenty-four in the Senate\, Clifford Case was a powerful voice for civil and human rights\, environmental protection\, ethics in government and a global role for the U.S. in combating the spread of communism and promoting democracy. Case was determined to uphold honesty and integrity in government\, introducing legislation on financial disclosure years before it was required by law\, while pursuing an end to the Vietnam War when it became clear U.S. policy was causing more harm than good. Case also was a forceful advocate for New Jersey\, working closely with his senate colleague Harrison Williams and other members of the state’s Congressional delegation to advance the state’s interests in Washington\, with particular emphasis on preserving and protecting the natural environment. Learn more about this fascinating figure from his biographer himself. \nWilliam R. Fenekes (B. A.\, M. A.\, Ed. D.\, Rutgers University) taught social studies and Spanish from 1974-1987 at Hunterdon Central Regional HS in Flemington NJ\, and then served as supervisor of social studies at Hunterdon Central 1987 to his retirement in December 2010. He received his doctorate in social studies education and curriculum in 1985. He is the author of many articles and books\, including his comprehensive biography\, Clifford P. Case and the Challenge of Liberal Republicanism (Lanham MD: Lexington Books\, 2023). \nThis event takes place at our museum at 26 Hadley Avenue in Toms River. DESCRIPTION:Join performer Scott Moreau with his one-man tribute to Johnny Cash. Late & Alone features all of his hits and some deeper dives into the Man’s music\, as well as more in depth stories about Johnny’s life. It spans nearly 50 years of his musical life\, featuring songs from his American Recordings including his iconic epitaph\, Hurt. \nScott Moreau is from Litchfield\, ME and holds a BFA in Music Theatre from Illinois Wesleyan University. After a lifelong dream of being a professional baseball player\, Scott turned to the stage after seeing a life-changing performance of Les Misérables in London his freshman year of high school. Through his years in high school and college\, he found a love for not only musical theatre but choral singing\, directing\, sound design and stage combat. Since graduating from IWU he has been traveling the country\, performing everywhere from his home state of Maine to Osaka\, Japan. \nHis experience not limited to performing\, Scott made his professional directorial debut with Ring of Fire at the Round Barn Theatre in 2011.  He has since directed MDQ at Farmers Alley Theatre in Kalamazoo\, MI and assistant directed at the Springer Opera House\, both while doing double duty as Johnny Cash. He made his television debut on the series finale of HBO’s Emmy Award winning Boardwalk Empire as Young Jim Neary. In 2013 he released a Johnny Cash tribute\, Home Of The Blues:  A Tribute to Johnny Cash at Sun Studio now available for digital download and on CD.

SEATING IS LIMITED so reserve your seat early by sending your name\, zip code\, email address\, and the name and date of the program (May 5\, 2024) to:  oceancountyhistory.programs@gmail.com \nThe Battle of Monmouth Courthouse: The Last Great Revolutionary War Battle in the North – Victor Pidermann \nThe Battle of Monmouth Courthouse (June 28\, 1778) was the largest field artillery battle of the Revolutionary War\, and was the last significant battle fought on northern soil during that conflict. More widely known for the legend of Molly Pitcher and the dispute between Generals George Washington and Charles Lee\, the battle is\, to this very day\, often misunderstood and overlooked in its significance. This presentation will provide an overview of the Battle of Monmouth\, placing it in context within the wider war\, and will conclude with a discussion of the latest research being done by the current custodians of the battlefield’s historic legacy. \nVictor Pidermann is one of the historic interpreters at Monmouth Battlefield State Park in Manalapan\, NJ and has been researching and interpreting the Battle of Monmouth for nine years. He has an MA in History from Monmouth University (2014) and a BA in History from Florida State University (2007). Mr. Pidermann has worked occasionally as an Adjunct Professor of History at Monmouth University and has also co-authored academic articles on topics ranging from Revolutionary War-era artillery to historic maps of the Battle of Monmouth. \n  \n

Cancellations will receive a credit at the Mathis House for up to two years.
