SUMMARY:Waves of Hope: The Inspirational Story of Agnes Negra
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Author of an Inspiring WWII Tale at Toms River Branch of the Ocean County Library \nDuring World War II\, a tech-savvy New Jersey woman took it upon herself to be a priceless information provider for families of captured U.S. service members. Agnes Joan Negra’s exploits are chronicled in the book Waves of Hope. Meet her son Ronald Edward Negra\, the author\, at several branches of the Ocean County Library this April. \nRonald and his wife Valerie will discuss his mother’s inspirational tale\, lovingly written from her own vivid recollections in Waves of Hope\, available at the Ocean County Library. \nThen as now\, parents\, spouses\, children\, and relatives sought any information they could find about their men and women in uniform – whether they were safe\, or even alive. This newly married wife and mother was no different. Her husband August suffered wounds in the Battle of the Bulge and was Missing in Action. \nSitting by her shortwave radio in her Nutley home\, Agnes monitored Radio Berlin’s nightly recitation of captured US military members. She sought news of her husband – but listened for more than that. She began notating all the names. Then she personally contacted the families of each one by mail. Often\, her letters were the first word that families received. \nIn Ronald’s book\, she recounts the turmoil of families on the home front\, the spirit of hope they gained from her messages\, and the exhilaration of reuniting with her husband. Autographed copies of Waves of Hope will be available for purchase following the program.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Gabe Henry
DESCRIPTION:“Our Failed Attempts to Make English Eezier to Spell” \nAuthor Gabe Henry \nDiscussion on Gabe Henry’s Latest Book: Enough is Enuf: Our Failed Attempts to Make English Eezier to Spell. \nLearn more about the Event and Register with the link provided in the margin. \n  \nTOMS RIVER – Have you ever wondered why the English spelling of words is sometimes just weird? Come on a surprisingly hilarious journey through the history of the English language during\na virtual author talk with Gabe Henry at 2 p.m. Wednesday\, Sep. 17. \nHenry will discuss his newest book Enough is Enuf: Our Failed Attempts to Make English Eezier to Spell. Anyone who has the misfortune to write in English will\, every now and then\, struggle with its spelling. \nIn the comic annals of linguistic history\, legions of rebel wordsmiths have died on the hill of spelling reform\, risking their reputations to simplify English spelling. This book is about them: Mark Twain\, Eliza Burnz\, Noah Webster\, Upton Sinclair\, Emma Dearborn\, Theodore Roosevelt\, Benjamin Franklin\, and countless others. Henry goes back to medieval England\, from the birth of standup comedy to contemporary pop music and to the digital age of swift online exchanges. \n  \nGabe Henry is the author of three books\, including the poetry anthology Eating Salad Drunk\, a humor collaboration with Jerry Seinfeld\, Bob Odenkirk\, Mike Birbiglia\, Margaret Cho\, and other\ntitans of comedy. Henry’s work has been published in TIME\, New York Magazine\, The New Yorker\, The Weekly Humorist\, US News & World Report\, and more. He has spent more than a\ndecade exploring the strange and forgotten history of simplified spelling\, which\, by his own admission\, has only made him a worse speller. He lives and works in New York. \n  \nOcean County Library cardholders can borrow Enough is Enuf in various formats for free.
